Philosophy of Education
My Philosophy of Learning:
All students have the ability to learn. It is imperative for teachers to believe that every child has the ability to learn. It is the teacher’s responsibility to adapt the material and the classroom environment so that each student can learn to their best of their ability. The teacher must provide students with the tools for them to learn and then act as a bridge to encourage and support that learning.
My Philosophy of Teaching:
Teachers must customize their teaching methods and material for each student. There is no one size fits all teaching style that is best for all students. The teacher should look at each student’s needs and teach in a way in which the student can best understand. This might mean having small group time or working one on one with a certain student.
My Philosophy of Classroom Management:
Teachers should keep control of their classroom by explaining to the students their expectations from day one. The teacher should also model these classroom expectations for the student. The teacher should also use positive reinforcement to reward good behaviors and explain to students why incorrect behaviors are not allowed and are harmful to the student and others.
My Philosophy of Learning Environment:
A safe learning environment is imperative for students to be able to succeed academically and socially. As a teacher, we should strive to create an environment in which students feel safe to share their ideas and to learn in whatever manner is easiest for them. Teachers need to create an atmosphere where it is okay to go out on a limb and make educated guesses or test new theories.
My Philosophy of Instructional Technology:
In a day and age where every student’s world revolves around the use of technology and is what they are familiar with, technology presents an unprecedented opportunity for teachers to engage and relate to students in a way they understand and enjoy. Technology should be used as a tool to improve students’ ability to learn and engage with material. Instructional technology should be implemented into the classroom to allow students to work collaboratively with their classmates and students around the globe in order to advance understanding on various topics, analyze and evaluate information, and virtually create their own digital products. However, technology should never be a distraction to learning but, rather, an enhancement to learning. Technology allows teachers to shift from the role of ‘keeper of all knowledge’ to ‘coach and facilitator’ by walking alongside students as they develop critical thinking skills through research, collaboration, analysis, and the creation of their own products to an extent that previously would not have been possible without the incorporation of instructional technology.
My Philosophy of Evaluation (Assessment):
It is imperative for teachers to constantly evaluate students. Since every assignment in the classroom is a learning opportunity, the teacher should constantly be formatively assessing each student’s growth in order to be able to adapt and customize the teaching method and material for each student’s individual needs. Infrequent assessment allows for teachers to become out of touch with their students’ grasps of important concepts and disconnected with their understanding of the material. By implementing frequent formative assessments like discussion questions, group work, projects, etc., the teacher is able to check each student’s understanding in a way that is fun and engaging for the student. Summative assessments are also a necessary element of assessment in the classroom. Summative assessments should be open-ended and provide students the opportunity to think critically and creatively.
